Facts About Global Warming

I used to joke that the government is so much information every day, he can not help but miss the truth from time to time. Recent report by the Bush administration on global warming is a classic example. Although far from perfect, it contains some essential but awkward truths that neither George W. Bush nor his critics want to confront ecologists. Which may explain why administration sought to bury the report, while critics have misrepresented its most disturbing finding.

U.S. Climate Action Report has made headlines because as it contradicted what the administration has said about global warming. Not only is global warming real, according to the report, but its consequences – heat waves, water shortages, rising sea levels, loss of beaches and marshes, the most frequent and violent storms – will to punish the Americans.

Biggest surprise of the report was its admission that human activities, particularly the burning of oil and other Fossil fuels are the main cause of climate change. Of course, the rest of the world has known since 1995 that human actions have "a discernible effect" global warming, to cite a landmark report of the Intergovernmental Panel on United Nations Climate Change. But the White House has resisted this conclusion. After all, if the combustion of fossil fuels is to blame for global warming, it makes sense to burn less of them.

The administration has been hammered for issuing a report on one hand admits that global warming threat of disaster, but the other maintains that it is necessary to reduce consumption of fossil fuels. The report squares this circle vicious arguing that global warming is now inevitable, so we should focus less on prevention than on it adapt. To cope with water scarcity, for example, the report advocates building more dams by increasing water prices to encourage conservation. Critics see the recommendations as evidence that the administration does nothing about global warming. Unfortunately, this is not so simple.

The worst thing about the new global warming report is that he is quite right about a fundamental aspect but often ignored problem: the effect of lag. Most greenhouse gases remain in the atmosphere for about 100 years. The result of this fact is undeniable that chemical matter what corrective measures are taken today, humanity is doomed to experience even if global warming past 100 years of human activity will generate.

This does that we should not make things worse by continuing to burn fossil fuels, like Bush foolishly urges, our children and grandchildren deserve better than that. This does not mean however that we as a civilization must not only submit to green energy sources immediately, but also start planning how we will adapt to a world that is linked to a warmer, drier, more disaster punctuated place twenty-first century.

Many environmentalists know it is too late to prevent global warming, the best we can do is minimize its scope. They do not like to admit the truth because they fear it will discourage people from doing, and demanding, the personal and institutional changes necessary to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas emissions. There is that risk. But truth does not disappear simply because it is embarrassing. By the way, a future of green energy would mean more, not less, economic well-being for most Americans, while increasing our chances of avoiding the most extreme scenarios of global warming. Sometimes the truth hurts. But avoiding it will hurt even more.
